valentines day : oh, how i love you!

I love Valentine's Day! What's not to like about a holiday that has solely to do with love? It doesn't necessarily have to just be about that special someone. There are so many people in my life that I love and that I am truly thankful that they are in my life. I love them with all of my heart. There are things, places, and memories to love too!

As soon as there is a crispness in the air, I'm already thinking about Halloween because I just simply love it! I just finished a new, gouache illustration called "Halloween Flight" with a cute, little witch on her broom and her sidekick Ollie the owl. These two are zipping about the Halloween night skies.

I printed the illustration for the card on a bright, white French Paper Co. cardstock, and embellished each card with some iridescent glitter medium. It's terribly cute! They are each packed with a Poppy Orange, Paper Source European styled envelope with rounded flap and packaged in a cellophane wrapper. The card is called "Witchy Wishes" and is now for sale in my Etsy shop.

So, while I realize that most people have probably already purchased and/or mailed their holiday cards. I drew this sketch well over a month ago, but I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with it - and well, my life is pretty hectic right now, but I won't get into that. Should it be full color in watercolor illustration, or perhaps a graphic treatment of some kind? Then I purchased some gorgeous, French Paper Co. paper for some other cards, and it hit me... it's perfect just as it is, a skinny line drawing. Perhaps it should be printed on something other than a crispy white, maybe a recycled, kraft colored paper and then because I'm all about the details, I thought some additions of flocking and superfine glitter would be that added touch to make them really special. This week I added a stack of new things to my Etsy store. A big portion of that was package notes, boxed greetings, boxed notes and holiday cards. You can find any of the new things in either Holiday or Stationery & Cards. This week I hope to get a chance to load up more archival prints & original paintings as well as adding some very cute surprises that my Mom has been making. I told her that I would give her items a whirl in my Etsy store for her. She's very excited!

A Card for Gram

My Gram is going to be 85 next week. Whew! Eight-five. Anyway, she still looks and feels great and is still a very spunky lil' lady. We're going out with a group of family members for a surprise birthday dinner for her this evening.

If there's one thing to know about my Gram, she loves greeting cards. Seriously, she loves them more than gifts, well, maybe not chocolate gifts. She can gobble up the chocolate, and at 85 she can eat the whole darn box if she wants. Since a card is literally the perfect gift, I thought I'd do a special handmade card for her.

I've been inspired lately by Papyrus (one of my favorite card shops -- and I love that Target carries their brand too!) and my neighbor Mrs. B who makes beautiful handmade cards. Her and I went shopping together a few weeks ago at Archiver's and together we did some serious damage. A few days after our shopping trip she took me down to her basement studio and showed me some of her creations along with other creations she has received that are her favorites. I was so inspired by all of the lovely things that I knew I had to make something beautiful for my Gram.

I figured a flower theme would be best. My Gram has always loved flowers. So, I went back to my watercolor paintings and I used my Daisy Bucket painting as the main image. I had already scanned the watercolor months ago, to make archival prints for my Etsy shop, so all I had to do was print out the painting once in my layout on my laser printer. I used a few things that I have never used before such as an embosser pen, so some of my card was experimental. After a lot of cutting, layering papers, gluing and wrestling with some ribbon my card was complete.

I made the daisy closest to the front larger than the original painting, then I cut it out once printed on cardstock and embellished it with my favorite superfine Martha Stewart glitter in pink & yellow. If you're ever doing detailed glitter work I would highly recommend the MS glittering glue with fine-tip applicator. It makes detail work a breeze.

Flying Ghost Illustration & Halloween Glow in the Dark Card

I knew I should have started making Halloween items in the Summer. Oh well... So anyway, before I move on to a few Christmas ideas, I had one more thing I wanted to make. I sketched this idea in my sketchbook and transferred the design to a watercolor illustration of a flying ghost in an evening sky.



From there I wanted to make a Halloween card. Cute, enough that I would buy in the stores. So, I scanned the card and cleaned up the illustration and made a path in Photoshop. Printed the card out on my laser printer on heavyweight cardstock. Then I cut out the ghost illustration and embellished the little ghosties with glow in the dark glitter. I saw the glitter at Michael's and I had to have it. I also, made a pop up of the little moon man. The moon and stars have yellow superfine glitter.



The inside had to be cute as well, and not just a plain inside. So, I did a skinny line drawing in Illustrator and then once printed on the cardstock and cut out, I embellished the little ghosties with more glow in the dark glitter. You can never have enough glitter in my opinion.
