a saturday morning treat : blueberry buttermilk scones

A few weeks ago when I bought the June issue of Martha Stewart Living I was pleasantly surprised. The magazine was chocked full of delicious recipes, a few that I even tried while we were up north. All very tasty -- especially the fajitas! But, the one that I couldn't wait to try was the Blueberry Buttermilk Scones. I didn't have any buttermilk while we were at the cottage so I had to wait until we got home to try this one.

I haven't always been a fan of scones because usually they taste dry, crumbly and lack something to me. But, this recipe intrigued me because of the low-fat buttermilk, which led me to believe they would be less crumbly, slightly moist and a bit more like a biscuit texture. I was right.

The texture was perfect. There is very little sugar in the recipe as scones usually are not very sweet, but the sweetness of the blueberries got to shine thru as well as the sprinkling of sugar on top. They baked up to a perfect golden brown. I recommend them hot out of the oven with a little pat of butter.

So, if you're looking for a new recipe for this weekend, possibly a simple Sunday morning breakfast with coffee I'd highly recommend this one. I think the addition of some homemade blueberry jam would be simply delightful with this recipe. I think while the berries are fresh, I'll look into that next!

Happy Weekend!
